Kabuki Japanese Restaurant – Huntington Beach

This is a late post, oh well. I’m still adjusting to this >_>
So I recently turned 21! I decided to have it at Kabuki at Bella Terra in Huntington Beach. The restaurant serves your typical (basic) Japanese food served on white plates and pretty platters. No Japanese street food here. It also has some “fancy” fusion stuff. Honestly, it’s not the best Japanese food you can get and it certainly is not the most authentic. However, I like this place for one thing: it’s Happy Hour from 3pm-6pm on weekdays! It’s not a big happy hour menu but it has a few specialty rolls for $6 or less. A few of the appetizers are $5 or less. I believe my boyfriend and I managed to spend around $40 worth of food during happy hour one time.

Anyway, so 21! I ordered a Pomegranate Saketini, it was quite tart. As for being a martini made of of sake, I can’t really compare it to anything because it was my first martini ever.. I was able to taste both the alcohol and pomegranate though.
I ordered a shrimp tempura roll but for some reason I did not take a picture of it. It’s like your everyday crunchy roll except it’s a little fatter, more thinly cut, and cucumber instead of avocado.

Gold Rush Roll is just a tempura battered California roll with eel sauce. Yum! But it can feel quite heavy after eating

The service was okay, the servers were nice. The feel of the place is quite nice and modern. Again, it’s not the best place for REAL Japanese food, but I think it’s decent enough for Happy Hour every once in a while.

Masquerade Dec 2009

So I was invited to a party that was masquerade themed. This means you need a mask! There are so many pretty masks online but they cost a lot! So I decided to make my own by taking inspiration by the masks I found online. FYI, this was totally time consuming, especially since I had to push back making the mask due to final exams and holidays. I also did not know about the costume shop in Irvine, I wish I did, I think that would have saved me a lot of time. But what’s done is done and I am quite happy with my mask.
The website I took inspiration from was Successful Creations. The website had MANY masks, and if I knew of it (and had the money) I probably would’ve ordered from them.
The masks that mainly influenced my mask were: 1, 2, 3, 4.

The trouble I had was trying to find a decent mask. Decent size, shape, material, and color. Many of the masks I stumbled upon were cheap flimsy plastic ones. So I resorted this Black Sophisticate Domino Mask from Party City for 5 US dollars. This sucker was really hard to find, it was hidden by feather boas. The ones at Party City weren’t exactly like the ones in the website because the fabric was not textured and it had silver glitter (I chose the one with the most glitter which was stuck to the boas. I had to slide it out -_-) It was and okay mask, I like how it turned out. Of course if I had more time I wish I got something with a better surface area or color like those online.
I also got a silver starry garland from Party City for 99 cents.
Of course you gotta stop by Michael’s for various things. I got silver ribbon (it was really hard to find, must’ve been a popular color) and a yard of this black and silver ribbon. I couldn’t find garlands/ribbon or sequins like those on the Successful Creations website. I was kinda sad lol. I bought bridal confetti because the white ones were on sale. Turns out I got ivory instead of white… I kept them though. I also got feathers similar to those of mask 2. I was hoping to get a few bigger feathers but they are sold in bulk and I really didn’t need that much! I know they sold peasant and peacock feathers individually but that wasn’t what I was going for.

I drew some swirls onto the mask with blue glitter glue.
I stuck a piece of confetti onto the left side of the mask.
I replaced the elastic string with silver ribbon. I learned during the party that I shouldn’t have done that.
I super glued the feathers on. It was a real pain because I accidentally dripped glue into the wrong spot and it got stuck.
I stapled the garland on. This was also quite difficult
I super glued some of the confetti flowers in between the wiring of the garland. Some of the pieces were just stuck in and not super glued.

Super glue was very useful but such a pain to use.

ESPN Zone – 12/18/09

I ate here for my friend’s 21st birthday. It was was nice to see high school friends again, do a little catching up. Since it was a Friday, and we had a large group of 16, the wait was.. I don’t know, an hour? two? I heard parking was horrible as well, luckily for me, I randomly turned left right after Katella to avoid such horrible traffic leading to the parking structure. At least we didn’t have to pay for parking! Any how, after being seated we just waited for everyone else to come and ordered drinks. I got a “insert adjective here” mojito, no alcohol! I have a thing for pretty things and that doesn’t stop at drinks and food items My friend ordered a Sangria because she thought it was pretty. It was quite pretty, gotta love that stemware. Turns out she didn’t like wine, but she was a trooper and drank it all!! Well most of it from what I remember. The menu at ESPN Zone isn’t exactly the lightest menu. This was quite troublesome for me since I’m trying to eat “lighter” and “healthier.” But I love my fried stuff I was debating between a chicken wrap or a Cajun chicken sandwich and after a small game of rock paper scissors with my friend, he landed with the wrap and I got the sandwich. The portions here are quite big and I regret not splitting with someone… I don’t like wasting food so I ate all of it -__- As for taste, it was pretty good. Sandwich came with grilled Cajun chicken, bell peppers, onions, and cheese. It also came with a side of fries, I love fries! These fries were somewhat dry. Overall, everything was okay. I’m sharing with someone next time! Way too much food. It came up to be a large bill as well. One where everyone else had to pitch in extra money, not because we were paying for my friend’s meal, but because people left early and didn’t leave enough money! -__-” Funny. We ran into them afterwards when we went to go lounge at the Grand Californian Hotel. The hotel was quite warm and full of people. A nice ending for the night.

ONE tip. If you ever go eat at Downtown Disney with a person who has an annual pass, make sure to use it! 10% off is a lot! Ironic because I told my friend to bring hers and I brought mine as well, but both of us completely forgot about it… we could have saved $24-30 off that bill!! Yeah. So mad!!!

A stupid thing I did was that I did not write down what I did, good game. Hopefully pictures will refreshen my memory. I plan to review and write more before school starts on the 25th. Hopefully I can accomplish a simple task such as that. But for now its chores and stuff.
